What to Bring to a Newborn Portrait Session

A little preparation can make a newborn portrait session feel calmer for everyone. You do not need to pack your entire nursery: bring the items your baby relies on for feeding, changing, warmth, and comfort. Keep essentials easy to reach, and allow time for pauses if your baby needs to eat or be soothed. A simple, flexible plan helps you focus on your newborn rather than searching through a packed bag.

Plan for Feeding

Bring whatever you normally use to feed your baby, such as bottles, formula, expressed milk, or a nursing cover if you prefer one. Pack more than you expect to need in case the session runs longer or your baby wants an extra feed. If you are breastfeeding, a water bottle and a light snack for yourself can also be useful.

Feed your baby according to their usual cues rather than trying to force a schedule around the session. A feed just before photos may help some newborns settle, but babies vary. Let the photographer know when your baby needs a break; time for feeding and burping is a normal part of working with newborns.

Pack Changing Supplies

Include several diapers, wipes, and a changing pad, along with diaper cream if your baby regularly uses it. Add a spare outfit for your baby and an extra top for a parent in case of spit-up or a diaper leak. Keep a sealable bag handy for damp or soiled clothing.

Newborns may need a change during the session, even if they arrive in a clean diaper. Dress your baby in something easy to remove, such as a simple zip-up sleeper, and avoid complicated layers or tight clothing that could leave marks. The studio may have its own wraps or wardrobe options, so check what is provided before packing additional outfits.

Choose Simple Clothing

For your baby, bring one or two clean, comfortable options in soft, neutral colors. Simple clothing keeps attention on your newborn’s expressions and features. Skip outfits with stiff seams, large graphics, or accessories that your baby may find uncomfortable. If you have a special family item, such as a knitted blanket, ask the photographer whether it can be included safely.

Choose parent and sibling outfits that feel comfortable and coordinate without matching exactly. Solid colors and understated patterns tend to work well together. Bring a backup top for parents, and consider feeding access and ease of movement when choosing what to wear. The goal is to feel like yourselves while keeping the overall look calm and cohesive.

Bring Familiar Comforts

Pack a pacifier if your baby uses one, along with a familiar swaddle, small blanket, or comfort item that helps them settle. A scent or texture they know may be reassuring between photos. Avoid bringing loose items into any setup where they could cover your baby’s face or create an unsafe sleeping position; follow the photographer’s guidance during posing.

Bring any other essentials that support your baby’s routine, such as a burp cloth, soothing toy, or a carrier for arrival and departure. Keep cherished items clean and easy to find, but let the photographer know before using them in a pose. A short conversation about your baby’s preferences can help the session adapt to what works best.

A well-packed bag covers the basics: feeding supplies, diapers, a spare outfit, comfortable clothing, and a few familiar comforts. Keep your plans flexible, since newborns set the pace and may need breaks. Before your session, check with Little Fern Studio about what the studio supplies and share any questions or preferences so you can arrive prepared.
